Gum Disease: How to Spot It and Tips for Prevention
Maintain the Health of Your Teeth and Gums
Gum disease or Periodontal disease is an infection of the tissue (gums) that surround your teeth.
Bacteria and other particles in our mouths build up over time creating plaque on teeth.
When not removed by regular brushing and flossing, plaque builds up and irritates your and gums.
Gum disease can be prevented, or at the very least, slowed down by proper oral hygiene.
The following list reviews common signs and symptoms of periodontal disease that you should never ignore.
What are the signs of gum disease?
According to the American Dental Association, the following symptoms may be a warning sign for potential gum disease. Please contact your dentist if you have any of these symptoms:
- gums that bleed easily
- red, swollen, tender gums
- gums that have pulled away from the teeth
- persistent bad breath or bad taste
- permanent teeth that are loose or separating
- any change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite
- any change in the fit of partial dentures
Tips to slow or prevent gum disease.
Gum disease is a slow-progressing disease. With proper care for your teeth and gums, it’s quite possible you’ll be able to slow or even stop it from progressing.
Here are some tips to help you maintain healthy teeth and gums:
Schedule regular dental exams and tooth cleanings.
Your dentist has special equipment to help remove the tooth build up that regular brushing and flossing can’t.
Maintain good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing twice daily.
In between your dentist visits, be sure to brush and floss at least twice a day to maintain healthy teeth and gums.
Genetics, pregnancy, diabetes and certain medications can make you more susceptible to gum disease.
Please discuss any family history, current conditions or medications you’re taking with your dentist.
