5 Tips to Combat Bad Breath
How Can You Overcome Bad Breath For Good?
You brush and floss daily, but yet you still experience bad breath from time to time. Whether you enjoy garlic bread at dinner or take a medication that makes your mouth dry, there are ways to control the lingering odors, also known as halitosis.
Studies show that halitosis affects more than 20% of the world’s population – that means approximately one of every five people all over the world is suffering from bad breath. But there are ways to keep it under control and prevent it in the future.
Proper Brushing Technique
The first and easiest thing you should do is brush your teeth, but are you brushing your teeth effectively? The American Dental Association recommends brushing twice a day and flossing at least once, reaching all surfaces of the teeth — including the the gumline and inside portion of the teeth near the palate and tongue. After you brush your teeth and gum line, don’t forget to brush the entire surface of your tongue where bad bacteria tend to linger the most.
Clean Dental Appliances Regularly
Just because you wear dentures or a retainer doesn’t mean you can ignore proper oral hygiene. Your dental appliances require daily cleaning, just as you would your natural teeth. Remove the appliances and brush them to eliminate plaque and any lingering food particles that create bad breath.
Get Rid of Dry Mouth
One cause of halitosis is a dry mouth, so be sure to stimulate saliva production by chewing sugar-free chewing gum or hard candies. Also avoid tobacco and drink plenty of water — not coffee, pop, or alcohol, which can lead to a drier mouth.
Carefully Choose Your Foods
Everyone knows that foods like garlic and vinegar can do a number on your breath, so eat them sparingly and be aware of the possible consequences. You should also avoid sugary, sticky foods that may stick to the teeth longer, making them more difficult to remove.
You don’t have to suffer from bad breath any longer. By practicing good oral hygiene, keeping your mouth moist, avoiding certain foods, and regularly visiting your dentist, bad breath can be a thing of the past.
